Malachai and I were the last ones to arrive at Professor Kiln’s room. It didn’t take long once we got there for everything to quiet down and to get down to business.

“What is your plan to pop the time bubble?” I asked.

Professor Kiln stood in her kitchen as the rest of us crowded onto the couch, loveseat, and chair. “Well, I wasn’t completely sure we were dealing with a time bubble until today. Trust me, I’ve known Julius Crowe a very long time.” She paused and shook her head. “I used to know him very well. More than well enough to know that he’s hiding a lot more than that stupid room we blew up today.”

I stared, mouth agape. “You and the Headmaster?”

“Believe me,” she answered, “that was a very long time ago. And you’re one to talk. You’ve practically started a harem. Although that’s probably just your partial fae heritage kicking in.”

That last remark left me speechless. And also got me a dirty look from Ivy.

After a moment of quiet, Professor Kiln continued. “He tried to kill me, and a time bubble is the only reason he would be that desperate. It’s the only thing that explains everything.” She shook her head as her shoes clackety clacked on the floor. “Poor bastard. Why would he give in to such dark magic? He knew damn well he wouldn’t come out unscathed.”

She paced back and forth while she talked before crossing the room to her bedroom to rummage around, leaving the rest of us hanging out in her living room. Which was nice. The room was bigger than our student dorms, had newer carpet, and a full-sized kitchen.

The paint was a happy baby blue color that was different than any other color I had ever seen in the building. I thought about her classroom and wondered if her private room wasn’t also decorated with magic.

It felt odd to be in Professor Kiln’s personal room. I felt like I should be doing something, not lounging around on her couch.

I fidgeted, knowing that this probably wasn’t the first place the Headmaster would look for us, but it was certainly one of the top choices. I guessed we didn’t have much time and hanging around all in one place like sitting ducks felt like a bad idea.

After a few minutes, Kiln came out of her closet holding a very thick book. She took one look at all of us sitting on her couches and her shoulders drooped. Like she forgot we were here. Then she took the book and went to sit at her kitchen table.

“Hey, that’s one of the books you took from the Administrative Records Room,” I said to Malachai.

“Yes,” Professor Kiln said. “We’ve got a shot at this. Maybe. But it’s going to be tricky.”

“What do we have to do?” Rafe asked. I could tell by his body language that he was as uncomfortable being here as I was.

“There are objects hidden in the building. Things we have to find,” she said.
